The Cambridge Virtual Scanning Electron Microscope

Welcome to the Cambridge Virtual Scanning Electron Microscope (VSEM) project.

VSEM is a research project in the University of Cambridge Department of Engineering. Its aim is to use Internet-based technologies to deliver teaching, training and assessment for users of the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM).

The project is developing a package of courseware to provide SEM-related teaching and assessment. Components of the software include:

  • Courses and assessment of SEM theory and operation via an online Course Management System (CMS)
  • A simulator of the SEM's imaging operations for familiarisation, training and assessment
  • An encyclopaedia of SEM scientific theory and operational procedures for reference

VSEM is potentially suitable for a wide range of users, including schools, universities and industry - in fact anywhere that SEMs are used or their theory taught.
